World of Disney’s ground floor store foundations near completion

World of Disney construction

Over the next year, the plaza at the heart of Disneyland Paris will be transformed in its biggest way since the opening of Walt Disney Studios Park — and here’s the first floor! Steel supports have now been pieced together to lay out the footprint of World of Disney, a new flagship store at the entrance of Disney Village, after the temporary top soil on the site was scraped off and trees replanted. This isn’t your average building site, either: the store is being built right on top of the high speed TGV train lines, on the huge concrete box built over the tracks during the resort’s construction, adding some unique challenges and complications.

These steel ground floor supports are very different to the method over at Earl of Sandwich, for example, and that huge box tower looming over the site is a ventilation shaft for the platforms below. The floor plan of the store narrowly avoids a second ventilation duct in the photo, above.

Final concept art for the store emerged last Spring, showing a slightly revised exterior which appears to reference a more Californian Art Deco — rather similar in style to the Franklin Department Store façade not far away on the Studios’ Hollywood Boulevard and very, very different to the existing World of Disney stores in Orlando and Anaheim.

It is expected the store, anchored by a huge blue globe topped by Tinkerbell and due to open in 2012, will completely replace the existing Disney Store in Disney Village, possibly triggering a series of refurbishments and replacements along the Village’s main thoroughfare.

  • Honestly, I think this looks really disappointing, especially for the flagship store, so close to the entrances. Looks more like a modern, functional building that’s been given a bit of theeming as an afterthought. Hopefully though the inside will redeem.

  • The design is very good but isn’t this store a little bit on the small side. It was a stratigic decission to locate the store in this location as a lot of Guests staying in central Paris or arriving by car bypass Disney village after exiting the Parks. Management feel that footfall in this store will increase by more than 50% by relocating the store nearer the Parks exit coridoor.

  • Love the look and design of this.
    Not at all tacky.
Lets hope that the rest of the, now rather tired and dated, Disney Village receives some kind of an upgrade as a result.

  • For me, it could be more Disney but still it looks very good. As for the rest of the Village, people have said they have been asked to fill in a questionnaire about what they want and items include bars (French wine/cocktail/Irish etc), Build Your Own Doll, Lego Store, Food Court (fast food), Italian restaurant and the top 2… T-Rex and Cheesecake Factory!

  • If you have a good look at the Imax cinema at Disney Village, you wil see that the building has the same art in it as the new World Of Disney building will have! A had a look on the parkingbuilding and took some pictures of it.
It’s not bad at all but it’s nothing like the other World Of Disney stores back in Amerika!

  • Looks amazing to me! I can’t wait to see when it is completed – knowing Disney, they will probably do something spectacular and we just don’t see it yet!!
